IACSEE held its Second International Conference in the Swedish city of Malmö from
17-19 June, 1997, and was centred around the theme of 'Economics, Environment and
Democracy: Conflict or Coexistence?'. Participants from nine countries made their
way to the Skybridge Hotel and Conference Centre in order to enjoy the programme. The conference
had three main tracks: (i) Eco-Detectives: helping young people think economically about the
environment; (ii) Children's understanding of society: teaching experiences and research
from the Nordic countries; and (iii) New technologies and international communication in
learning. There were also a number of workshops and presentations of members' papers, plus a
Research Meeting held on the afternoon of June 19th.
For those who chose to stay on in Malmö after the conference, two optional tours were
provided which featured such highlights as a visit to the factory that produces the famous Absolut
Vodka, dinner with typical Swedish seafood at a sea-side restaurant, and an opportunity to join in
with the traditional celebration of the midsummer night's eve, the greatest festival day in Sweden.
The late Torsten Madsén, Honorary Fellow of the Association, said: "
The conference was a very stimulating event for those of us in the Nordic countries with a
special interest in children's social and economic education."
The findings of the post-conference evaluation forms speak for themselves: 88% of participants
considered the organisation of the conference to be 'very good', with the structure of the
programme being rated 'very good' and 'good' by 41% and 59% respectively.
The Association extends its gratitude to BT plc who provided greatly-appreciated sponsorship
for the event.
