There is increasing academic and professional interest in how children develop their understanding of the way in which the social, economic and political world is organised. Studies in primary and secondary socialisation, and in economic and political socialisation, have been followed in many countries by curriculum development and programmes that incorporate learning about society into educational practice. Teachers, researchers, educational administrators and the wider community are aware of the sophisticated appreciation of the social world that children are able to develop.

The IACSEE network is a wonderful way of forging links with first class colleagues in Education, Teacher Education and related areas. There are opportunities in the Association for collaboration with, and support from, the friendliest group of people that you could wish to meet. All of these members enjoy the rich international environment that we have developed over the years and recognise the benefits and enrichment that this brings to us in the field of Education. We eagerly meet together at our biennial conferences and many members also get together on other projects and at other conferences. Check out our Conference Section for details of forthcoming and previous conferences. Our high quality International Journal receives submissions from members and interested academics from very many countries and I invite you to peruse the wide range of articles and authors detailed in the Journal Section of this site.

The International Association for Citizenship, Social and Economics Education (IACSEE) was formed in 1994 as a forum for education professionals, academics and members of the wider community who have an interest in how children learn and are taught about society and economics. Membership of the Association is open via a three-tier system to those who are:

  1. teaching in schools, colleges and universites;
  2. researching aspects of this area;
  3. working in support services or networks.

The benefits of membership include:

  1. International Conferences held in alternate years: Glasgow, Scotland 1995; Malmö, Sweden 1997; Atlanta, USA 1999; Durham, England 2001; Eegmond aan Zee, the Netherlands 2003; and Chicago, USA 2005. Programmes include members' papers, seminars, panels, and conference proceedings are published;
  2. an International Journal, Citizenship, Social and Economics Education, published by JPC Publishing three times a year. It includes refereed articles on innovations and research, analyses of curriculum practice and reviews. Members receive the Journal as part of their subscription, although it is also available to non-member institutions at around £50 a year;
  3. National Networking Opportunities for formal and informal information exchanges at a national level;
  4. Access to our online Members' Section, which contains the latest Association news and opportunities to partake in online discussions with other IACSEE members.
